WAG Studio

The WAG’s Studio Programs developed in response to popular demand. Saturday Morning Art Classes, sponsored by Winnipeg School Division, began in 1937 and are still conducted each fall and winter in our studios. Until 1972, these were the only regular classes held at the WAG. In 1972 and 1973 summer programs were organized for the general public. They were so popular that a limited number of classes were offered in fall 1973. These classes marked the beginning of a permanent Studio Programs. By the early 1990s Studio Programs had grown to such an extent that a larger space was needed. In the fall of 1995, we moved out of the WAG basement and into our new home in two adjacent buildings. The Studio Building and Storefront Studio allowed us to expand our offerings and develop into one of Canada’s largest and most successful gallery schools.
The philosophy of the WAG’s Studio Programs springs from the belief in the value of art education as a vital component in the personal development of individuals of any age. Our programs are taught by practicing artists who share with students their enthusiasm, insight, and highly developed skills.
The Studio Programs of the Winnipeg Art Gallery are committed to providing excellence in art instruction by offering:
- A variety of classes for children, teens, and adults
- Tours and discussions of the WAG exhibitions that let students see the artwork
- Experienced artist/instructors
- Seven separate, well-lit studio spaces
- Spring, summer, fall, and winter class sessions
- Weekend workshops for adults which often reflect current exhibitions
